A Little History
Born in Argentina he set out for Europe after his studies in technical architecture and design. His one-year trip quickly transformed into a four-year excursion through Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, India, and Japan. Bukin graduated from the Centre d’Estudis Cinematografics de Catalunya in Spain, then he established himself in New York and has since been working as a filmmaker around the world.
In 2001, Bukin returned to Asia to manage the production of Los niños del Nepal (The Children of Nepal), which won the Spanish Academy Award (Goya Award) for best short documentary 2004.
After Nepal, he directed a film campaign about childhood poverty in Peru and Guatemala with the NGO Global Humanitaria. The project won numerous awards, gave birth to three successful years of TV Commercials and became the inspiration for his films Angel’s Fire, Lima’s Streets, Bread, Mauris from Titicaca and Welcome to Poptun. These films have been screened and awarded worldwide at more than 100 international film festivals, conferences and universities including: DOCUWEEK Theatrical Release, Montreal World FF, IDFA in Amsterdam, Edinburgh Intl’ FF, NYU, Harvard University (Unaff), The New School in New York, Lincoln Center (HRWFF) and for diverse audiences in countries such as the US, Sweden, Pakistan, Chile, Germany, France and many others. Bukin’s Angel’s Fire earned top honours as the winner of the distinguished short documentary award by [ida] the International Documentary Association at the IDA AWARDS in Los Angeles, and was selected at DocuWeek for ACADEMY AWARDS consideration.
Bukin shot many international productions, including his feature documentary Dreaming Nicaragua. A look at children facing tragedy with outstanding humor and hope, the film won the prestigious Gold Award at FIPA in France; the FIDH Award in Belgium; the Jury Prize at NIFF, the Prize of the Spanish Association of Scientific Film; was presented by the US Embassy in Managua, and Amnesty International in Europe, universities, museums and more than 80 international film festivals. Marcelo has been awarded the NYSCA New York State Council on the Arts grant for this project.
Today, Marcelo works as a Director, Filmmaker & Creative Director of cross-platform campaigns combining branded series, commercials, short and feature length stories. His projects include shoots with Sony, P&G, Starbucks, Citibank, Intel, Hellmann’s, Dannon, Olympus, Lipton, Google, Unilever, NBC, OWN, MTV, TLC, among many renowned brands and networks. Recent international campaigns were shot in the US, Japan, Brazil and Costa Rica. He is fully bilingual English-Spanish and resides in New York City.
